The Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons has unveiled its plans to support persons with intellectual disabilities with professional therapy across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
Mr. David Anyaele, the Chairman of the Commission, announced during a meeting with Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Ukwa East Local Government Area that the initiative would help beneficiaries improve their communication, play, and life skills, enabling them to live more independently from their wards and caregivers.
He reiterated the commission’s commitment to training healthcare workers in specialised services that would foster inclusivity in education and guarantee that students with disabilities gain access to facilities without discrimination.
Concerns were raised prior to this development by caregivers about the economic hardship and certain issues experienced by persons with intellectual disabilities.
Mr. David also acknowledged the support and dedication of Governor Alex Otti in enhancing the livelihood for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), mentioning the recent establishment of a Zonal Office of the National Commission for PWDs in Umuahia.
During the meeting, different disability clusters tabled their needs, ranging from scholarships, assistive devices, and skill acquisition programs. In his remarks, the Ukwa East LGA Chairman, Mr. Chibunna Akara, ably represented by his Deputy, Mrs. Thelma Ekeke, pledged the council’s support and assured that ramps would soon be installed at the LGA secretariat to improve accessibility.
